0:09
welcome back to another episode of the
0:12
upbeat dietitians podcast hello guys
0:15
welcome back to a brand new episode
0:17
today we are talking about what I eat
0:20
today videos also known sometimes as
0:22
like full days of eating
0:24
we to be transparent don't have an
0:28
outline today we are just going on Vibes
0:30
so we'll see where this conversation
0:32
takes us we have lots of thoughts and
0:34
then I always discuss it so I'm sure
0:35
we'll be able to come up with plenty to
0:37
say about wedding day videos yes but
0:41
before we get into all of it
0:43
we wanted you to so you don't get sick
0:47
of us at the end when we just like get
0:48
sick
0:49
you can get sick of this now while
0:51
you're still here
0:53
um be sure to check out the beat Deets
0:56
for bonus content our link is in our
0:58
Instagram it's also on our website it's
1:01
through Spotify to get more bonus
1:03
content and more of us
1:06
um I'm trying to think of like I don't
1:08
know anything else we have to Pro oh
1:11
you could submit questions now on the
1:13
website so at the upbeatdietitions.com
1:18
there's like under the podcast tab
1:20
there's a submit a question tab go there
1:23
you can see upcoming question or
1:25
upcoming topics that we're going to talk
1:27
about you can submit questions there so
1:29
that way we can actually talk about what
1:33
you want to hear so definitely go do
1:35
that I feel like there's a third thing
1:37
and I'm
1:38
we're new to this so yeah we are going
1:41
to start doing this housekeeping in the
1:43
beginning of the episode just to kind of
1:44
remind you guys of what's all going on
1:46
it will usually be the same stuff but
1:49
I'm sure we'll have different stuff as
1:50
we are creating new ideas the third
1:52
thing that I want to add is if you are
1:54
not already and you do want to watch us
1:57
instead of just listen you can always go
1:58
to YouTube we are over there so you can
2:01
see us chat see our reactions to each
2:04
other's words
2:06
um that's always an option as well yeah
2:08
the audio only is just not cutting it
2:11
for you and we will have some episodes
2:12
coming up where we highly recommend
2:15
watching the video version because you
2:17
might be watching something with us
2:21
a spoiler alert but you'll have to see
2:24
in the future what that is so with no
2:27
further ado
2:30
without further ado
2:34
this is how my brain works at this time
2:36
they're used to it without any further
2:40
Ado let's talk about what I eat in a day
2:44
videos full day of eatings specifically
2:47
what are these so
2:49
they're kind of
2:51
self-explanatory they are a video of
2:55
someone posting everything they eat
2:57
during the day typically it's like meals
3:00
and snacks they don't always include
3:03
like drinks I notice those aren't I
3:06
don't tend to see that much unless they
3:07
just they're smooth
3:08
yeah that's true smoothies are almost
3:11
released
3:12
protein shakes or supplements so that
3:17
will be included but it's kind of just a
3:20
full
3:22
video picture of what someone eats for
3:25
the entire day
3:26
and Hannah already kind of talked about
3:28
who posts these videos it's a lot of
3:30
like wellness
3:32
girly or wish Wellness culture in
3:36
general
3:38
types of social media we'll post about
3:40
this yeah we're gonna get into a little
3:43
bit more but that's kind of just the
3:45
bottom line of what yeah it is yeah
3:49
sometimes dietitians too will post like
3:52
I've posted what eight in a day videos
3:53
and yeah we'll get to our thoughts on
3:56
like if they should or shouldn't be a
3:59
thing in our opinion so I won't put to
4:01
mention to that now but pretty much
4:03
anyone will post them even like just
4:05
like General influencers I've had people
4:08
like love to watch
4:09
or just know what everyone enjoys eating
4:12
I enjoy knowing what others are eating
4:14
yeah
4:15
good segue here I guess into potential
4:18
problems
4:20
I like watching them just because I like
4:22
getting like recipe ideas and things
4:24
like that seeing what someone creates
4:27
like what their go-to breakfast is just
4:30
for like new ideas but a potential
4:32
problem here
4:34
could be that
4:37
you feel like you like have to eat those
4:40
Foods or you compare your foods to their
4:42
Foods if theirs are quote unquote like
4:44
healthier looking like that's first and
4:46
foremost one of the biggest issues I'd
4:48
say is just like the food comparison and
4:51
that applies to like not only the
4:52
choices but portions as well it's like
4:55
oh they only had
4:56
that many pieces of toast I usually have
4:59
this many pieces of toast it just makes
5:01
you feel like you are either overeating
5:03
or under eating or doing something wrong
5:05
which is not necessarily the case yes
5:08
the portions are a big part
5:10
something else is like they don't they
5:12
don't show how much they eat they don't
5:15
normally do like a before and after I
5:16
start
5:17
eating this meal but that would also be
5:20
a very long video If It showed the
5:23
entire time they were eating
5:26
because I remember back in um
5:29
High School probably there was like this
5:31
one specific model I would watch a lot
5:33
of her what I eat in a day videos and
5:36
she would make huge portions for like
5:39
breakfast and I was like stunned I was
5:42
like how is she eating that much but I'm
5:45
pretty sure now I look back at it she's
5:46
like meal prepping breakfast for the
5:48
week it was like like toppings and stuff
5:51
like that but it just looked like oh my
5:53
gosh you're making a whole sheet pan of
5:56
nuts and like trail mix how are you
5:59
eating all that yeah
6:02
so videos do show better picture than
6:06
Pro than pictures like we talked about
6:08
what's the progress pictures but it
6:11
doesn't show the whole story especially
6:13
the portion sizes exactly as well
6:17
I feel like another issue maybe yours is
6:20
the same as mine I'm sure we have
6:22
different ones too but the next one I
6:23
want to point out is
6:26
uh it's not always happening but there
6:28
tends to be a trend of body checks
6:31
before should we get into that side of
6:34
things that's going to be like I feel
6:35
like the main
6:37
the main
6:39
perpetrator of issues yeah
6:43
yeah if you don't know what that is it's
6:46
when before someone shows their video
6:49
whether it's like the workout routine or
6:51
what I eat in a day usually in some way
6:53
like health and fitness related they do
6:56
like a body check just like showing
6:58
their body usually like their abs are
7:00
out or their other they're usually
7:02
exposing more skin than someone who
7:04
wouldn't be doing a body check
7:06
showing off that yes they have created a
7:10
body with these food choices and or
7:13
workout routines and the big issue here
7:16
is it perpetuates the idea that if you
7:19
follow this workout routine that I
7:21
follow or if you eat this what I eat
7:23
today like I did with these portions and
7:25
these amounts and all of that then you
7:27
will get the same body which we've
7:29
discussed a million times on here before
7:31
but that's not how it works
7:33
we always say this I know it's so cliche
7:35
but you could eat the exact same as that
7:37
person and work out the exact same as
7:38
that person and you would still look
7:40
different because bodies are more than
7:41
just food and exercise they're an
7:43
outcome of so many different things and
7:46
I know that I always see the argument
7:48
about
7:49
what their body checking is a bad thing
7:51
but like whether your mind wants to
7:57
associate the two or not like you the
7:59
first thing you see in a video is like
8:01
oh someone's like what I eat in a day
8:03
and it's some like fluxing or like
8:05
definitely showing more skin I'm like
8:07
thinking about I've never seen anyone
8:09
like in what we wear like in PJs like no
8:13
one's starting the video from PJ this is
8:17
what I eat in a day where it like
8:19
doesn't show their body at all it's
8:22
always
8:25
not always that's an extreme I have not
8:28
seen everyone at United video so I can
8:30
be wrong
8:31
but it's very like the majority of the
8:34
time
8:35
there's a lot of Skin showing and
8:38
they're flexing
8:40
and then what the brain does and it like
8:42
associates oh this is what this person
8:44
looks like this is what they eat and
8:46
like whether that's intentional or not
8:49
it's
8:53
I feel like sometimes I can see like two
8:55
ways around it like one is intentional a
8:58
lot of times I think it is intentional
9:01
or someone's like this is like what
9:03
other people do or this is how they show
9:05
it off that's a little bit unintentional
9:07
but it's still having that effect where
9:10
it's like
9:11
this is what I eat to look like this
9:16
each day and it's like one day of eating
9:18
like that's a problem I hope that's
9:22
another thing but we won't get to that
9:24
yet but the body checking is the main
9:26
thing where you can show what you eat in
9:29
a day I've seen like what I eat in a day
9:31
videos there's actually a tick tocker I
9:33
follow
9:34
um so I don't know what she used to be a
9:37
cooking account but now she just does
9:39
what I eat in it like that's it but she
9:42
never shows herself and it's just like
9:45
cute little like
9:48
okay it's it's still more cooking I
9:51
would say but it's just like a day of
9:53
cooking almost yeah yeah
9:55
so there is a way to do it I feel like
9:57
that's a spoiler but
10:00
it's the like showing your body
10:04
and then showing what you eat especially
10:07
if your business
10:10
operates off of your body type which
10:13
talked about last week is a big thing or
10:15
two weeks ago probably whenever the
10:17
progress picture episode was all about
10:20
how that's a big issue with Fitness the
10:23
fitness industry is if you don't have a
10:25
certain body type you have a hard time
10:27
getting clients basically and I feel
10:31
like if you do these what I eat in a
10:33
days starting with the body check
10:35
knowing that by showing off your abs or
10:39
your biceps or whatever
10:41
that you have a better chance of getting
10:43
more clients or people buying your
10:47
product whatever it is
10:49
that's when it becomes a problem
10:51
um but not everyone's doing that not
10:53
everyone has a business where they're
10:55
trying to get clients or whatever and
10:58
some people do just do what any day
11:00
videos for other reasons
11:02
like that cooking lady that you talk
11:03
talked about
11:05
um but yeah I think that's my biggest
11:06
issue with it
11:07
in terms of the body check thing is like
11:11
is it leading to you getting more sales
11:15
just because
11:18
you can what's the word I want to say
11:20
manipulate your clients into thinking
11:22
that they will look like you if they eat
11:24
like you basically
11:27
does that make any sense at all I feel
11:28
like I'm a lot it was all about that no
11:31
it does I think it definitely does make
11:34
sense and there's even some of that in
11:37
the dietitian world so it's not just the
11:40
wellness
11:42
influencers yeah or Fitness there's some
11:46
of our own
11:48
unfortunately like just body checking
11:52
isn't great it's not like you're not
11:54
allowed to post your body on the
11:56
internet exactly
11:58
to wear like a crop top my belly's
12:01
hanging out like that's not the issue
12:02
here it's the intention behind it that's
12:05
like a big
12:07
that's the big thing with what I eat in
12:10
a day videos like it's like what is the
12:11
intention behind this like anime the
12:13
really good note like are they going to
12:16
make a sale based off of how their body
12:19
looks and how their like what
12:21
they're showing what they're eating
12:23
is it's like a comparison video is this
12:27
like to get a little bit more views like
12:30
stuff like that which I feel like
12:33
honestly anytime you're posting on
12:35
social media you're trying to get views
12:36
so I don't know
12:38
how much that round that holds there I
12:41
don't know who's posting hoping that no
12:43
one watches it
12:45
yeah that's uh yes but I see what you're
12:48
saying it's definitely agree yeah and I
12:51
think
12:52
what was it oh the other problem that we
12:54
thought of was it's one day so like I
12:58
like the one lady I watch because I
13:00
don't say ladies she's like our age the
13:02
girl I would not
13:05
describe us as ladies either it feels a
13:09
little bit older
13:10
um
13:11
God there's not there's anything wrong
13:13
with being older
13:15
or to stop there but I can't wait to be
13:17
honestly I want to be wise and old and
13:20
know what my life I saw some video that
13:23
was like I get why like old people sit
13:26
outside and do nothing I saw that and
13:29
I'm like yeah that's what I want I want
13:31
that yeah
13:34
doing nothing just being present that
13:37
sounds great it sounds really great
13:40
um but the other problem was it's like
13:42
one call me back sorry I really deterred
13:45
I did the person the girl that I follow
13:47
she posts them every day so she's
13:50
showing
13:51
like different things she's eating but
13:54
she never body checked so like
13:56
it's more of us like let's look at what
13:58
I'm cooking every day type videos
14:01
whereas if like someone posted every
14:04
once in a while or only one
14:06
and it's like
14:08
a lot about the intention behind it like
14:10
it's not a good picture of what they're
14:12
eating every single day they could be
14:14
leaving out food they could be including
14:18
more food than you see
14:21
um you don't always know what is going
14:25
on there and you don't know how accurate
14:27
of a day that actually is for them
14:30
exactly like I think basically here like
14:34
what I eat in a day videos
14:36
can be which I guess a good
14:38
sub-antronics piece unless we have more
14:40
problems we want to talk about like they
14:42
can be just fun content to watch but
14:44
they should not be guiding your eating
14:46
in any way like they should not ever be
14:49
used to determine for you personally
14:51
what food choices you're gonna make
14:52
maybe for ideas in terms of like meals
14:55
to make and stuff like that but never in
14:57
terms of like portions or like
15:00
the exact ingredients you have to use in
15:02
a recipe or anything like that they
15:05
should never be
15:07
a deciding factor in your food choices
15:09
retweet retweet I agree well do we have
15:13
any other problems to mention before we
15:15
go to our opinions on if we think
15:18
these are appropriate or not
15:20
I think those are the big ones I don't
15:22
think there's like
15:24
a Time and Time the big thing is like
15:27
the intention behind it and the body
15:29
checking I feel like those are the two
15:31
really
15:32
big ones yeah I agree and what you just
15:36
said too all the portions and
15:38
like not the portions the that only
15:41
depicts one day yeah which people often
15:45
don't eat unless you're Emily eat the
15:46
exact same thing every single day unless
15:48
you're me
15:50
so that's true my what I hate in a day
15:53
maybe an accurate
15:55
Emily has confessed on a podcast
15:57
Emily has confessed on the podcast that
16:00
she is accidentally in intermittent
16:01
faster and she accidentally has no
16:06
variety and it's the same thing almost
16:07
every day yes
16:10
yes neither intentional again the
16:14
intentions
16:18
yeah
16:21
yeah
16:22
let's talk about if we can incorporate
16:26
this or like if there's a way to
16:28
incorporate these videos so
16:32
I think the Foodie in me I don't even
16:34
want to say dietitian the Foodie in me
16:37
wants to say I want more of these
16:40
because I just love seeing what people
16:42
are eating like
16:43
they said Hannah like I just love to see
16:46
like breakfast ideas and lunch ideas and
16:48
dinner ideas and like it's so cool
16:50
because like everyone has to eat
16:53
so everyone's eating something at some
16:56
point or another during the day so it's
16:58
like always so fun and like especially
17:01
like cultural wise to see like what
17:04
types of foods are people eating how are
17:06
they cooking it like stuff like that
17:09
and I think there is an appropriate way
17:12
to share these videos and I think this
17:15
number one way
17:17
that would help this would be to stop
17:19
body checking I think that would play a
17:22
huge part like
17:24
I'm sure if they clicked on the video
17:26
and then they went to someone's page
17:27
like there'd be maybe a video of some
17:30
her in their body somewhere unless they
17:32
were like
17:34
I always like really kind of Envy the
17:36
people who don't ever show themselves on
17:39
camera I'm like wow that's you don't
17:41
have to like look semi-clean you can
17:46
just voice it over sometimes it's not
17:48
even a voice like
17:50
some people like have like one of my
17:52
favorite like reactors is like Ava
17:54
reacts she's like that white fluffy dog
17:56
like it's just her dog barking and like
18:01
that sounds really great to me
18:04
um but I think the body checking is one
18:07
of the most problematic things that we
18:10
would need to kind of
18:11
get rid of and
18:14
it really doesn't serve a purpose
18:17
like it's not
18:19
really helping anyone
18:22
also I don't know if you're muted or if
18:24
I lost you I was muted sorry okay okay
18:28
um what I was saying was except for like
18:32
to make sales like that's how it helps
18:35
but it only helps them
18:36
yes it's not
18:38
really helping anyone else
18:41
unfortunately yeah and I think like
18:46
it's it's just the body checking it's
18:48
like a really big
18:52
it just doesn't have the best effect
18:55
like in this day and age especially
18:58
where like
18:59
there's constant body comparison die
19:02
culture is running or prevalent
19:04
everywhere just like everyone wants to
19:07
like be as small as possible and then
19:10
you see this video of this like small
19:13
typically it's a girl I haven't ever
19:15
seen a guy do a what I in a day video I
19:18
don't know if the algorithm just knows I
19:20
don't really
19:21
I don't know if I'd want to see that
19:24
um
19:25
but it's I typically see like
19:28
girls do these videos
19:31
um and then like you see like how
19:33
tone their abs are or what their legs
19:37
look like and then you're like oh I want
19:39
to eat like that or I want to do that
19:43
Fitness routine I'm actually really glad
19:45
you brought up
19:47
the fitness component of it because I
19:49
didn't realize how much I there is of
19:52
that online until like I started looking
19:54
back through my saved like workout
19:55
videos
19:57
and there's a lot of body checking and
20:01
fitness workout videos yeah that's like
20:04
if you saw a plus size male or female
20:09
trying to like promote what I eat in a
20:11
day to get you to be their like personal
20:13
training client
20:15
I feel like they're way less likely to
20:16
get the clients compared to someone with
20:19
a six-pack doing the same exact thing
20:20
like they could we could have the exact
20:22
same content exact same video exact same
20:24
information being presented but the
20:27
person with the
20:30
quote-unquote fit body is going to be
20:33
the one that makes more sales yeah yeah
20:34
so you just need to get rid of that I
20:36
think that would be
20:38
very helpful yeah I don't have a whole
20:41
lot to add I also think sorry I think
20:43
yeah I think we're lagging because I
20:45
keep no you keep talking during your
20:48
your expenses and then like it cuts you
20:51
off when you're talking
20:52
yeah I think I'm
20:55
a little behind I think so too
20:58
um I didn't have a lot to add to that I
21:00
think I agree with everything that you
21:02
say
21:02
I know as dietitians it's very
21:06
controversial for us to say that
21:08
especially as non-diet dietitians that
21:10
we aren't completely against what eight
21:13
in a day videos I think a lot of like
21:15
intuitive eating anti-diet non-diet
21:17
whatever you call yourself dietitians
21:20
tend to be like very strict like never
21:23
share what I eat in the day video but
21:25
like we've explained I think there's a
21:27
place for them
21:29
um it's all again all about the
21:31
intention behind them really that's what
21:33
it all comes down to yeah I think at one
21:36
point well I know I don't want to speak
21:37
for you I know at one point I was very
21:39
anti-like okay I remember I saw like
21:43
one of our dietitian friends post a what
21:47
I eat in a video and I was like
21:49
horrified race blackout I was like oh my
21:54
gosh like
21:56
they're showing what they're eating and
21:58
people are going to compare but like
22:02
it's a lot it's the intention and
22:05
it's if we didn't have that component
22:08
where like we were constantly comparing
22:10
our bodies to each other like imagine a
22:12
world like that like um not even just
22:15
that part
22:17
um
22:18
it wouldn't be something we'd have to
22:20
tiptoe around so much but like
22:23
there could be a way to do these
22:26
that could be really beneficial like
22:29
also if someone was like this is what a
22:32
really
22:34
speaking of which okay speaking of which
22:36
we just a video we just watched together
22:38
where someone like
22:39
shows everything they ate but they also
22:42
showed like how they did it like working
22:44
or like this is how I managed to fit it
22:47
all in that could be really beneficial
22:48
like yeah
22:50
how did you manage to cook all your
22:52
meals or like make sure you're eating
22:55
enough
22:55
while you're working or you're also
22:58
going exercise classes or like whatever
23:00
it is like that
23:03
I feel like for my time management
23:04
standpoint a big time management band
23:07
that could be really beneficial as well
23:09
yeah I've on YouTube a long time ago
23:13
it's probably not a very good video but
23:14
my intentions were I think positive I
23:17
tried to post a wedding in the day of
23:19
like when the day basically goes to
23:21
like how I still was able to feed myself
23:23
and like just get stuff in
23:26
um again put out the best production but
23:28
that was my intention there was to kind
23:30
of show that like
23:32
eating it doesn't have to be as
23:34
complicated crazy thing like it can just
23:35
be just beating yourself and sometimes
23:38
the bare minimum
23:40
um I had another thought shoot oh I also
23:43
see sometimes like people in like
23:46
anorexia recovery posting like what I
23:49
eat in the days and
23:51
again
23:52
how it ends up being produced I think
23:55
plays a role in if it's a productive
23:58
video or not but
24:00
um I think it can be helpful to show
24:02
like that experience and they're eating
24:05
more than they're used to but once again
24:07
especially if you're coming from an
24:08
eating disorder
24:11
comparing your food choices or your body
24:13
or anything like that to someone who is
24:14
maybe at a different point in recovery
24:17
is not going to be helpful
24:18
but I think it can be cool just to see
24:20
the experience that it is possible to
24:22
recover and all of that so once again
24:25
kind of wishy-washy here but that's
24:27
another example of ones I'd see that
24:30
could be helpful yeah
24:32
see intention behind it because like
24:34
right off the bat you're saying this is
24:35
like an eating disorder recovery video
24:38
and there are some times I I see this
24:41
all over the Internet because
24:46
there's just
24:47
lemon
24:49
is like there's a lot of mentalities
24:51
online but like one of the main ones is
24:54
like well they don't owe you anything
24:56
and you should just swipe away like that
24:59
could be a video where like you know
25:01
where you're at in recovery and this is
25:04
not going to benefit you but maybe this
25:06
will benefit someone else who also has
25:08
an eating disorder
25:11
um or is in recovery so like that'd be a
25:13
good instance to like swipe away
25:17
um
25:17
but then there are some times where it's
25:19
just like very intentional or they're
25:21
like trying to get you to sell buy
25:23
something of theirs whether it's a
25:25
supplement whether it's a fitness
25:27
package where it's
25:32
they
25:34
are kind of owing us something because
25:36
they're promising
25:38
results but they're potentially their
25:40
marketing strategy isn't the most
25:44
honest
25:45
yeah
25:47
yeah I really see a lot of that too that
25:49
applies a lot to our content a lot of
25:50
times too like the comments will say
25:53
I don't know it's also something like
25:56
you don't need to count calories and of
25:57
course all the calorie counters come in
25:59
and say oh why would you say this
26:01
it's like
26:03
you could just like swipe it doesn't
26:05
apply to you but I do get the argument
26:07
of
26:09
I am putting that on out on the internet
26:11
where anybody could see it so I can
26:13
totally see both sides
26:15
it's about knowing yourself I think
26:19
and like knowing what is going to
26:21
benefit you and blocking accounts that
26:23
you know we're not going to help you and
26:25
hitting the not interested button
26:28
it's tough It's like I agree with both
26:31
sides I think
26:33
people should be able to post whatever
26:35
they want people can just scroll past or
26:37
whatever
26:38
but also we have to have like a little
26:40
bit of
26:42
understanding of
26:43
what our Outreach can be with our videos
26:46
that we're posting the tricky space to
26:49
be in and someone's always going to be
26:51
unhappy
26:54
it's about the intent and knowing who
26:56
you're trying to reach and what you're
26:58
trying to like give them
27:02
yeah precisely
27:05
so I think that's everything I have
27:08
to say about what in Day videos can't
27:11
really think of much else
27:14
overall
27:15
I think
27:17
we would probably at some point in our
27:19
dietetics career we'd probably be
27:21
surprised to hear ourselves say what I
27:23
eat in today videos are not
27:26
horrendous or terrible like they can be
27:30
okay it's just unfortunately the way
27:33
that they're presented right now
27:36
might not be the most beneficial
27:40
to people and could be potentially doing
27:43
more harm than good right now
27:47
if we all just started making these
27:50
shifts in our videos it'd be crazy
27:52
imagine
27:54
how much different the world would be
27:57
yeah
27:59
yeah we've definitely changed our
28:01
thoughts and I'm sure ask us another
28:03
year from now I'm sure we'll have
28:04
different thoughts once again that's why
28:06
you get to think whatever you think
28:07
about these if you are very anti-winning
28:09
today that's totally fine if you are a
28:12
sucker for what I eat in the day and you
28:14
love them that's okay too
28:18
it's the internet there's something
28:20
there for everybody yeah
28:22
yeah
28:24
so
28:26
that wraps up everything we're talking
28:27
about today we do not have to plug
28:30
anything to you because we already
28:33
included that so
28:35
definitely go be sure to check out the
28:38
