Episode Description

In this episode of The Up-Beet Dietitians podcast, Emily and Hannah are talking all about one of wellness culture’s worst enemy - dairy (GASP). Wellness and diet culture claim that dairy causes inflammation, breast cancer, and that dietitians are paid big money by Big Dairy to promote this food group. But is any of this true? And what about lactose intolerance? The girls break this all down in more in this episode.

  • I'm Emily and I'm Hannah we are best friends and dietitians we have a goal of challenging nutrition misinformation and

    0:15

fitness Trends with an evidence-based approach each episode we will dish up our thoughts about the latest facts on a

    0:21

popular health related topic where the upbeat dietitians

    0:27

    [Music] thank you

    0:33

hello everyone welcome back to another episode of the upbeat dietitians podcast

    0:38

hello guys welcome back today we're talking about Dairy very very Niche

    0:44

topic um we're gonna talk about Dairy because it is often very demonized by diet

    0:50

culture and wellness culture so we're gonna debunk some of those myths today we're going to first go over what Dairy

    0:56

is we'll do that quickly because I'm sure you for the most part understand what it is we're gonna go over the

    1:01

nutrition benefits of dairy um we're gonna break down some of the diet culture claims and if they if they

    1:08

are true or if they aren't true and we will also talk about some of the nutritional differences between Dairy

    1:15

and milk Alternatives if you do choose to have like nut milks for example and then if there is any other reason why

    1:22

you don't consume Dairy like lactose intolerance as Emily will be able to speak to personally

    1:27

um we can explain how an intuitive eating approach can go along with intolerances allergies

    1:35

especially in terms of dairy as well yeah I'm sorry for this one I feel like dairy's been

    1:41

one of the Public Enemies for a while now and has a bad rep

    1:46

out there so we're here to chat about it and all the things you need to know so

    1:52

let's first discuss what exactly falls in the dairy food group so first off

    1:58

that we always think of his milk our classic cow's milk whether you're like a

    2:03

two percent skim milk fan one percent whole milk whatever that may be

    2:10

cream half and half sour creams all the creams those also fall under Dairy

    2:18

yogurts will fall under Dairy as well and this is not like your almond milk

    2:24

yogurt so your coconut milk yogurts your cow's milk based yogurts it probably

    2:31

won't say cow's milk but it's just advertises yogurt cheese including

    2:36

cottage cheese and hard cheeses soft cheeses Breeze manchangos Greers

    2:42

Cheddars Swiss you're naming all like the fancy cheeses why would you first go to Brienne manchego

    2:50

    I

    2:55

I I don't know if I talked about this at all anywhere publicly but since living

    3:01

on my I feel like I've talked to this or maybe we just talked about it like off off the mic off record off record

    3:11

um and I have been buying more cheese with like

    3:17

my own money and my favorites being gruyere and menchingo that's why I brought those up I guess it makes sense

    3:24

it's just I don't know how bougie our audience is you have to let us know guys that I threw in some chatter and swiss

    3:30

pepper jack uh American cheese I mean you're

    3:36

speaking my language I love me some fancy cheese I like to go did I show you this when you came to visit that Kroger

    3:42

has like their little like fancy cheese area I think so they have like I love cheese

    3:47

areas so they're so fun me too they're so fun but yeah I wanted to give some examples

    3:54

of a heart and soft so inclusive we're inclusive here what's our what's our

    3:59

tagline now something in diversity Good Vibes Good Vibes and diversity even when

    4:05

it comes to cheese exactly yeah no bad cheeses even blue cheese oh added cheese

    4:13

because blue cheese gets a lot of hate and not because it's a dare because of its smell

    4:18

it's very stinky but it's delicious other Dairy options or dairy examples

    4:25

are ice cream and butter I feel like sometimes butter gets left out I almost

    4:31

forgot to add to the list but I was like oh yeah butter exists and that's wonderful yeah yeah

    4:36

well we'll kind of explain when we get to the lactose intolerant part that these all have various degrees of

    4:42

lactose in them so you may be able to tolerate certain ones but I'll save that I thought it'd be fun to start first of

    4:48

all with some Dairy fast facts what are your thoughts I love this new like outline we have

    4:56

there's something we have a slowkin we have something called fast facts now

    5:01

maybe we'll make this a consistent segment we can get like a sting for it so it like before I start it goes Fest

    5:07

facts and then I like just ran all off anyway

    5:14

we don't have time for that but as as we become famous and we have a podcast editor

    5:21

that's not just the two of us you can look for the stings and taglines and slogans get ready guys okay so our first

    5:30

Fastback today is that you may already know this one but Dairy is a great source of bioavailable calcium and

    5:36

vitamin D that's usually the big or the big two nutrients that are kind of

    5:42

emphasized and pushed when it comes to Pro Dairy enthusiasts like myself

    5:48

um you know you hear that like milk makes your bones strong and that would be why calcium and vitamin D

    5:54

yeah especially when you're growing up I'm sure like that's a very important

    6:00

time for the growth phase of your life and people are pushing milk like no other it's true

    6:08

but there was there is evidence behind why yeah because they want you to have

    6:15

strong bones were you a family that had milk with like your dinners I we always had milk on us I was a

    6:23

person that would drink like full 16 18 ounces of milk regularly yeah which is

    6:30

so surprising why I suddenly stopped tolerating it but I I'm a huge milk fan

    6:36

I feel like this is no this isn't our bonus question but

    6:42

yeah we were big milk drinkers were you guys I feel like you yes we lived in a

    6:47

house where it was like milk or water those were your two drinks of choice I think we discussed this we were a skim

    6:53

milk family and you guys were too right we were also the skin mellow family yeah yeah yeah and now when I buy milk I

    7:00

usually do get skim I sometimes will get two percent but I'm just like I feel like whatever your raise is what you

    7:06

drink yeah Bobby's family I think was like a two percent one percent so he

    7:11

buys that and sometimes I'll like try to drink it if he has cereal and I'm like oh my gosh yeah what is it's crazy how

    7:19

different it is yeah especially when that was like all you knew exactly growing up exactly well our

    7:27

other Fastback has to do with the nutrition benefits as well as a nutrition podcast

    7:33

um and you may not know this but dairy foods are also especially like milk and cheese and cottage cheese are very great

    7:41

sources of high quality protein that contain essential amino acids that our body cannot make on their own

    7:48

that's that so we've got calcium and vitamin D we've

    7:54

got protein we've got as I'll explain later or one of us will explain later we've got even more vitamins and minerals in there

    8:00

electrolytes it's a good thing it's a good thing we're kind of spoiling it but

    8:06

Pro Dairy Pro Dairy the last fast fact which I think is

    8:11

going to be one of the most shocking parts of this episode is there are

    8:18

linked health benefits including reduced inflammation improved digestive health

    8:24

and healthy immune systems and I'm sure you've heard Darius

    8:29

anti-inflammatory that's our first diet culture claim that we're gonna get into that's what the third person I say

    8:35

there's Recent research a lot of it there's a lot of recent researchers

    8:41

actually showing it helps reduce inflammation so it's just

    8:47

something being spread like wildfire in the diet misinformation World

    8:52

unfortunately yeah the gnome I guess that's a spoiler

    8:59

it's a good segue so our we'll we'll next go into the different diet culture

    9:04

claims and yeah the first one is inflammation um diets like Whole30 are really big on

    9:09

this and they perpetuate this idea that Dairy and gluten too I believe right it's Whole 30 gluten-free of course it

    9:16

is I figured you would know with your history um

    9:22

yeah diets like that as well it's of course like influencers and

    9:27

those like holistic doctors and chiropractors and such thing you think holistic nutritionists yeah

    9:34

yeah they're always pushing that idea the ones who probably don't even know how to read or research article are the

    9:39

ones that say these things so what we kind of already spoiled it even though there are tons of claims

    9:46

because we are evidence-based around here we're gonna see what the evidence says and it says that Dairy can actually

    9:52

    be very anti-inflammatory

    9:57

this next one's one of my favorite ones yeah because it's just it's just so laughable so something else diet culture

    10:05

loves to perpetuate with dairy is that dietitians are paid by big Dairy

    10:13

but no one knows what that means who the hell is Big Dairy who's running this yeah we're not getting checks from like

    10:19

Fred from Big Dairy every week or anything if we were paid sponsored or whatever by baked Dairy

    10:29

Hannah and I would only be working one job

    10:35

I did much less stressed out if they Dairy was involved in my life no we would be getting paid at least double

    10:41

we'd also be talking a lot more about Dairy than we do

    10:46

I don't know how we don't bring it up often no but like people on the internet make it seem like dietitians are always

    10:52

talking about Dairy and gluten and whole grains where like once or twice

    10:59

I feel like it's because of what the food pyramid and my plate has on it

    11:07

which aren't even developed by us it's developed by the government we

    11:13

we don't really have a say in that I'm sure there's some dietitians on whatever board

    11:18

decides it but like oh I hope so if if there wasn't at least one I uh I would

    11:25

be surprised I kind of look that up actually I'm curious I I bet there's like a professor

    11:32

yeah like an economist or something size professor

    11:38

probably an economy I feel like that's where it gets pushed

    11:45

around is people just think that's all we do is like the plate diagram and

    11:51

follow the food pyramid here's our handout it's a resource we could talk about

    11:57

if it makes sense for that particular client or patient but we're not just like giving them a handout on my plate

    12:02

and saying hey good luck just make sure you eat plenty of dairy like yeah

    12:07

we go we're only allowed to drink Dairy actually that's it's the only beverage option

    12:14

yeah and if your plate is not half fruits and veggies you're done for New York don't even talk

    12:21

to us yeah I'm gonna slap you on the wrist what are we gonna do it's so dumb

    12:28

it's sort of like yeah my Plate's a thing it has Dairy on it we might

    12:34

talk about Dairy for those who it makes sense to talk about it for oh and his butthole is like right on the camera

    12:40

if you're watching this back I am so sorry he tends to do that

    12:45

um I forget what I was saying it's probably the thing about my plate and how angry I am it's a thing it exists

    12:51

but if you're in my opinion a good dietitian you probably aren't just

    12:56

talking about my plate you're gonna go a little bit beyond that yes and no one's paying us to use my

    13:02

plate also no no like no one's or the food games like no

    13:09

one's threatening us like on the other side like that's what I learned yeah like

    13:16

when becoming a dietitian is like you get to kind of pick and choose what information you use for each person you

    13:22

work with like we're not told exactly what we have to follow and what we have to do it's dependent on the person

    13:28

yeah that individualized care you know

    13:34

I know you know can't say everyone knows you're a carnivore diet

    13:41

anyway um yeah my my Dairy big Dairy is not

    13:47

paying us we we talk about Dairy like I said if it makes sense for the person but we teach

    13:54

our clients how to make choices that make sense for them within their budget within their taste preference what makes

    14:01

them feel good if I had a patient who was lactose intolerant do you think I would be making them drink Dairy at

    14:06

every meal like my play suggests absolutely not that would be stupid and

    14:12

that would make me a terrible dietitian so it's a nutritious Choice it can be a

    14:17

very part of a part of a very healthy diet but we're not being paid to promote it this

    14:23

podcast is not sponsored by big Dairy no and probably another reason I don't

    14:29

know if we I'll bring this up later actually I'll bring this up later I'll hold off ooh

    14:35

Intrigue for you guys to stay tuned I'm gonna do that on purpose um

    14:41

I'm actually just foreshadow we're we're trying new tactics like this episode we have things

    14:47

like fast facts we have our slogan foreshadowing things to come like

    14:53

commercials for our later in the labs oh the last diet culture and dairy myth

    15:04

out there who's that drinking Dairy will cause breast cancer

    15:10

and this just makes me so upset because to say one food

    15:17

causes cancer it's so bad is absurd it's not that simple can't

    15:25

there's a reason we haven't cured cancer if it was as simple as

    15:30

dairy I think we would have figured that out by now and like breast cancer

    15:36

they're zero cases record numbers people stop drinking Dairy no more breast cancer no like

    15:43

people who don't drink Dairy get breast cancer people who don't who do drink

    15:49

Dairy develop breast cancer it's it's not as simple as one food

    15:56

and I'm sure it's like oh the hormones and all the additives

    16:02

and whatnot breast cancer is not has been around along with dairy and

    16:09

actually like we've developed ways to make dairy safer to consume

    16:15

so that people don't get like I'm about to say like salmonella you don't get

    16:21

salmon E coli what comes what can come from like raw milk

    16:26

I food safety lack of probably like a bacterial thing because

    16:34

but no it's not that simple like you can't just say you can't just say

    16:41

things cause cancer when it comes to food that's it's mind-blowing

    16:47

if one thing were to cause cancer it would not be salt like

    16:53

we would not be selling it on the streets or there would be a lot more Public Health campaigns around it

    17:01

like cigarettes there was a lot of campaigns around like

    17:07

lung cancer prevention and that but and that's necessarily ban cigarettes

    17:12

because clearly they have not but that's not a food one

    17:18

also like there's a very clear distinction um and if you want to look up research

    17:25

articles about it you're welcome to but that's when it gets like

    17:33

    I don't know I get I I'm all for people

    17:38

um to say doing their own research but like you have to know what you're reading to

    17:44

be able to do your own research as well that's why like people who will have background information or

    17:52

background knowledge and experience reading research articles can do that and I feel like someone doesn't like

    17:58

what one person has to say about it like ask for a second opinion on an interpretation and it can't be a news

    18:04

article because news articles are not scientific articles I've seen that so many times where people reference news

    18:11

articles I'm like this is just some reporter who might be citing an article right and even when

    18:19

they cite it they oftentimes they misinterpret the results on purpose to sell whatever story

    18:26

they're approaching right or it's like a super weak study that was done over like

    18:32

four weeks and like it was observational observational yeah on rats right

    18:39

crazy stuff right crazy world but yeah no we'll not giving breast cancer

    18:45

nope in fact it kind of like the information thing it might even be beneficial in a lot of different ways

    18:53

and like that's the thing is you will not see Emily or I ever say

    18:59

like drinking milk will cure breast cancer drinking milk will reduce inflammation we say it might help with

    19:06

that or it could do this it might do that people who say like a equals B when

    19:11

it comes to science like this are just trying to get you to buy something most likely or follow you or

    19:17

follow them or whatever yeah such drastic claims we we typically don't have things in that

    19:24

at such absolutes where we can say like milk causes cancer that's just not how

    19:30

food in the human body works it's so much more than just like this food causes this effect because we have

    19:36

genetics we have what other food choices are involved exercise habits I could

    19:41

play a role and body fat percentage all that stuff would also play a role in the cancer

    19:46

topic specifically and so that's again why it's just so wrong to say that this food causes

    19:53

    cancer let's talk

    19:59

about some other health benefits in general an expansion on our fast facts

    20:05

we already mentioned that it has a lot of really great vitamins and minerals

    20:11

like the calcium vitamin D it also has those amino acids additionally it also

    20:18

has vitamin A which people always think of I think like a little bit more associated with Eye Health

    20:26

so that's great as well Dairy is also very versatile and convenient it can be

    20:33

manipulated into very different things and Incorporated in very different ways so

    20:38

it's really easy to use so from like

    20:44

a food accessibility standpoint along with just like

    20:49

versatility of food items it's really great for just being able to be used for a lot of different things which is

    20:56

beneficial that it's not just serves one purpose this was the thing I was going to bring

    21:02

up before was It's relatively affordable so that's why I feel like

    21:09

there's some elitism when people are like oh I don't drink milk or anything or like I can't believe you feed your

    21:15

kids milk like um a lot of dairy products are relative

    21:21

we're not oh I want to say a lot we're gonna say milk specifically we're gonna stick with that milk is pretty cheap and a really great

    21:27

source of protein calcium vitamin D vitamin A those other some other amino

    21:33

acids that your body can't make and it's cheap that's one of the biggest

    21:40

emphasis like there's a reason a lot of school lunch Programs Incorporated or

    21:45

like other food assistance programs that milk is typically included on there because it is Affordable and is very

    21:53

nutrient dense so when people get a little bit either a

    21:58

high horse about it it's doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth because I'm like

    22:04

do you do we want to talk about like the average salary like the average wage

    22:11

people make do we really want to bring up that like affordable housing

    22:16

stuff like that that plays a part in health that people don't think about so

    22:22

like yeah we're gonna they're gonna use maybe like someone who maybe might not

    22:28

be as well off as someone is going to use or purchase foods that are affordable to

    22:35

them and are it's a very added benefit that's nutrient dense it just it rubs me the

    22:42

wrong way when people it's not just dairy in general like Foods in general and people get on

    22:49

their high horse about avoiding Foods because they would never eat that yeah and the Alternatives the Alternatives

    22:55

they always give out are like two three four times more expensive than

    23:01

the regular old milk or crackers or I mean little you name it

    23:07

coffee creamer that's a big one I always see literally everything regular coffee mate because instead you should be

    23:13

getting this seven dollar coffee creamer to use for your coffee that is made of mushrooms instead of regular coffee

    23:19

because that's also bad for you apparently and suddenly your grocery bill has tripled because of health reasons yes

    23:27

and then it makes people feel guilty for choosing regular milk ah it's just yeah so frustrating

    23:35

yeah and I think I'm trying to remember the quote I don't know remember what the quote is and I will

    23:42

maybe I'll go look it up and bring it back on the podcast one day but if I remember it but that quote about like

    23:49

Health uh healthism evolves over time as the like upper

    23:56

class tries to distinguish itself from the Lower Class by like

    24:03

demonizing affordable light I don't think it was affordable items but it was maybe it was like more accessible items

    24:10

and oftentimes the case is very much that in a lot of these situations yeah

    24:16

the last health benefit is it's great for active people so you get the protein

    24:22

if we haven't hammered that in at this point you get protein from dairy uh we

    24:27

also get some carbs which is great depending on the dairy source I'm thinking is butter carb

    24:36

no talking more like milky like chocolate milk specifically is used a

    24:41

lot in athletics like Emily and I used to work at Purdue's fueling stations we

    24:46

pushed that chocolate milk real hard for the athletes we were working for big Dairy yeah

    24:52

so it was just Purdue as a whole their whole yep uh Sports Nutrition department was just being funded by big Dairy

    25:00

anything Gatorades were to blame than I was gonna say like it wasn't that a controversial thing though is Gatorade

    25:07

only would support our Athletics and not like our entire School

    25:12

I forgot about this I know this was like controversial doesn't it or something

    25:17

yeah or out are these trade secrets are we yeah

    25:24

right or do we do we like sign something that we don't know about yeah since we can't talk about Gatorade

    25:29

yeah anywho any whom yeah it's great it's got

    25:34

protein carbs of its milk liquid if it's milk obviously electrolytes can be

    25:40

really great for a nice little post-workout drank let's speaking of that go into

    25:46

milk Alternatives so maybe I have this backwards maybe we

    25:51

should do lactose intolerance first and then go into like the different Alternatives let's do that let's talk

    25:57

about like we can do that what to do if you don't tolerate dairy or you just don't like it it's okay if you don't

    26:02

like it or if you're choosing not to drink it because of ethical reasons as well that's also totally appropriate because again only you can choose what's

    26:08

on your plate or in your glass yeah um and that's a big part of intuitive eating that's often forgotten

    26:15

about I think is that yes all foods can fit but you it shouldn't involve eating

    26:22

because it'll make you feel very good and like if Emily were just like chugging milk because she can it's

    26:28

intuitive it's all foods fit it's food Freedom whatever that actually isn't very appropriate

    26:34

intuitive eating I would say so all foods fit but they don't have to all fit in your diet

    26:40

so if eating dairy whatever you find specifically makes you feel not so great

    26:46

it makes you feel not great it's okay to just not eat it when it comes to like the calcium the vitamin D the protein

    26:53

all of that not drinking Dairy does not mean you're not going to get those nutrients elsewhere there's a lot of other Foods you could consume that will

    27:00

also give you those and if needed supplementation could always be helpful as well but again you guys know our

    27:06

thoughts on that supplements are kind of a last resort um when it comes to lactose intolerance

    27:13

specifically which is just simply when you don't uh your body relax the enzyme lactase

    27:18

which is used to break down lactose typically that can be a spectrum so the

    27:24

degree to which people who have lactose intolerance can totally vary

    27:29

um Emily I get to let you speak to this more than me because I don't have this thankfully knock on wood

    27:35

what what like what's like your spectrum like what foods do you tolerate better than

    27:41

others so I feel like I there's two very common lactose

    27:49

intolerance kind of spectrums I hear more about but that's not to say there's only two it's just the two I most hear

    27:55

about I'm on the side more so than rates like anything but like heavy milk

    28:01

products like the liquid milk so like I'm okay with hard cheeses like my Grier

    28:09

and munchingo well um but something like ice cream

    28:14

is going to cause me a lot of abdominal discomfort

    28:19

but on the other side there can it can get as Extreme as and I actually I think

    28:25

we I told you I think I told you this because there's no way I didn't tell you this freshman year I tried to do that like lactose intolerance study where it

    28:33

was this whole group of people who we just we all knew we had issues with milk and drink milk together

    28:39

and like within five minutes multiple people had to like go to the bathroom

    28:46

so there's that extreme as well um luckily I'm not on that side

    28:52

otherwise that way you because I I have a couple friends also who like I know like they actively avoid it at all costs

    29:00

because it's not an allergy but it's like severe enough that it causes

    29:06

um some discomfort in your quality of life whereas there I know there are also some people like me a little bit who

    29:12

might tolerate so many things here and there but maybe not others and like it gets a

    29:18

little bit tricky I feel like cheeses tend to be the lowest lactose content yeah when it comes to like yogurts

    29:25

that's where I've seen it all over the place like yeah yogurt's tricks some people tolerate it

    29:30

    yeah and I don't I don't think I tolerate it sometimes I think I do

    29:38

but there was that one I think it was last year I told you about how I was like on a Greek yogurt kick and I did

    29:44

not feel good yeah but I was like this is so good yeah but yeah there are some lactose

    29:54

free but like still dairy alternative so like I talk about Fair life a lot

    29:59

um their products are all lactose free but still made of milk they have a yogurt actually that you should try it's

    30:04

really really good um it's lactose free which is just Grand they're really the only lactose free

    30:11

dairy yogurt that I've tried but there are tons of plant ones like there's coconut milk yogurt almond milk yogurt

    30:19

haven't tried a lot of those because thankfully I don't have to and I just know what I like

    30:24

um anyway good that's good yeah we're something in the dairy-free Community got down yeah I'll give them that

    30:32

um cheeses I know that's very controversial cheese are just are not so good yeah

    30:40

cheese is like so it's like a science and it's just like really hard to make

    30:46

cheese they haven't gotten it yet yeah yeah

    30:51

um when it comes to like actual straight up milk there's also a lot of lactose free options there like Fair life has

    30:56

theirs Kroger has their carb Master Brands lactose free and there's Lactaid

    31:02

milk all kinds of Brands will have a galactose free option so if it's not a

    31:08

milk issue it's the lactose is the issue you likely can still find certain products where you can still enjoy the

    31:14

dairy you just not have the lactose and bubble guts yes

    31:19

and from an ice cream sampling because ice cream is also very important yeah ice cream there is also a lot of options

    31:26

there almond milk both you know ice creams coconut milk is one of the most common

    31:32

yeah dairy alternative ice creams I've seen backing is actually a really cool

    31:37

one where they remove that like they remove lactose so it's like lactose free

    31:44

but it's also made from milk so that's really cool about it's actually one of my favorite ones

    31:50

um that tastes most similarly to milk for me Breyers has Brands Lactaid as

    31:56

brand so many you can just walk up and down the aisles and there's so many options

    32:03

Fairlife has one I like theirs a lot I love their life Fair life and I need I was gonna say I feel like you're pushing

    32:09

Fair life I'm not getting paid to say this I really do love for your life I have like some kind of Fairlife product

    32:15

probably every single day whether it's like I use their milk for my lattes it has more protein in it than like regular

    32:21

milk does um their protein shakes that are impossible to find but so delicious that are also

    32:27

lactose free so that's really great for those who like protein supplements but can't tolerate the regular stuff if

    32:35

for whatever reason whether it's lactose intolerance a dairy allergy or ethical reasons or just taste wise you decide

    32:41

you want to switch to like a milk alternative that's always an option there's tons out there these days like almond milk oat milk soy milk all of

    32:47

those um so I want to quickly run through the differences there and just like calories and protein which disclaimer here when

    32:56

it comes to intuitive eating um our our food choices should go beyond

    33:02

protein in calories and also take into account budget and taste and what's available so we say this just for

    33:10

information only like you can make these choices for whatever reasons you want but people do always ask at least me

    33:17

personally like what's the best milk to drink and of course I give my whole Spiel what I just said but

    33:23

um we'll kind of break it down so almond milk is the lowest calorie version it also has the least amount of protein

    33:29

it's like for about a cup like 60 calories one gram of protein that one is Diet culture's favorite

    33:36

people love almond milk because it's so low calorie but like we've explained when you remove

    33:42

that Dairy which again it's always your choice but you're probably losing a lot of protein

    33:48

um it could be fortified but you could also be losing calcium and vitamin D so

    33:53

yeah you're consuming less calories but you're also losing a lot of other nutrients as well

    33:59

um oat milk is very popular these days and it's one of my favorite Alternatives um I think Emily you agree with that I

    34:05

love oat milk I do too it's really good especially in coffees like lattes um pretty similar calorie Wise It's like

    34:12

130 for a cup about three grams of protein so also relatively low in protein but again like if you're getting

    34:20

protein otherwise from other things don't sweat it um soy milk is the most similar in terms

    34:27

of calories and protein it's got about eight grams of protein which is about what a cup of milk has so that could be

    34:33

a good option if you don't want to or you don't tolerate milk and you want to have an alternative that's very similar

    34:40

and then lastly rice milk we have listed here which is also similar calorie wise

    34:46

about 110 per cup but also very low in protein like the almond milk is at about one gram

    34:51

so I guess bottom line with all that is choose what works for you taste and

    34:56

budget wise and all that like they're all very different but um whatever you don't get from milk they

    35:02

also taste you can get they're all so different yeah exactly it's not

    35:08

something that like like Hannah said it's past the calories and protein yeah we're just sharing with you for like a

    35:15

comparison because people always ask yeah but like I use them differently too like I will use like cow's milk in my

    35:21

cereal but I probably would use oat milk for like a latte I probably wouldn't use oat milk for a bowl of cereal

    35:28

it just depends on taste and what I have in the fridge yeah and like I like to get like fun flavored

    35:34

stuff like Trader Joe's has their like Maple oat beverage I love so good yes

    35:40

yeah yeah um I got their pumpkin one this year and that wasn't as good I was kind of sorry

    35:45

I was gonna ask you how it was I haven't been getting them as much it was decent

    35:51

um they also have what is it it's like a oh my gosh it's like a brown sugar maple

    35:58

oh creamer coffee creamer that one's really good ooh okay is it like in the

    36:04

small box yeah I've had that one that was good that was good that was really good so yeah like I don't choose it because

    36:10

it's oh and not dairy it just has a fun flavor and it's good in coffee or chai Lattes or whatever

    36:15

and like say you do like someone in my case who has issues with dairy and I

    36:21

choose a dairy-free product that doesn't mean that like dairy's bad that's yeah

    36:30

I don't View Dairy as bad at all yes there are things that don't make me feel

    36:36

great but that doesn't mean it's a bad product it just means maybe there are some things I should avoid eating

    36:43

because it doesn't agree with my body and that's okay it doesn't mean that I'm gonna go

    36:50

screaming on social media that Darius the devil and just because you don't get

    36:56

us all it's yeah I'm I'm one person and my one experience doesn't mean that

    37:05

it's gonna like change the whole thing like yeah there's a way to avoid foods and

    37:11

also happen tolerances and allergies and you don't need to view the food as good versus bad

    37:17

yeah it's just like oh I I can still we could we clearly still listed benefits

    37:22

of dairy but the pros and cons of every they're pros and cons to everything like every food

    37:29

because it's not as just black and white like if I had a peanut allergy I wouldn't be like telling

    37:36

everyone to avoid peanuts because they're the devil it's just I personally can't but I can thankfully again I need to like knock on

    37:42

wood a lot today because I was telling Ross the other day I was like if I ever developed with food intolerance I'm gonna be real bummed out

    37:48

because I love eating so much at least I guess like lactose would be

    37:53

my first choice because there are like lactase pills you can take that I know isn't the best thing to do yeah but it

    37:59

helps versus like gluten like oh yeah it would suck yeah or like peanuts

    38:07

like an actual allergy like not not allergies that stresses me out are we

    38:13

eggs oh that would be terrible my heart goes out to anyone who has that kind of thing

    38:19

because that really sucks yeah really sucks

    38:24

so that's Dairy bottom line I kind of I guess to kind of like bring a lot of points into a couple

    38:31

quick sentences um it's up to you whether or not you choose to eat dairy like I choose to

    38:37

Emily does to a certain extent we don't push it on our clients if that's of your concern not that anyone

    38:44

listening to this probably has that concern but the trolls do you can choose to eat it or choose not

    38:50

to and you can choose not to for any reason whether it's an intolerance an allergy an ethical reason or you just

    38:55

don't want to you don't like the taste or you like literally if you have no reason that's okay too as long as you're

    39:01

not pushing that idea onto others telling them it's not healthy just because you choose not to drink it or eat it only you get to choose what's on

    39:08

your plate and your glass just make sure that your reason for choosing Dairy or not choosing Dairy

    39:15

isn't rooted in diet culture and fear I think that's all I think you covered it yeah the only other thing only other

    39:23

thing what you already said we're going to re-emphasize it and if you don't eat dairy there are other ways to get those

    39:29

nutrients and health benefits we talked about before it's not like they're we're pushing that Dairy

    39:36

and I have milk in every meal no you you can get those nutrients from other sources as well yeah there's other foods

    39:42

that have calcium in them yes okay so uh for our bonus question

    39:49

there's obviously a few ways I could have gone I was gonna do like what percent of milk but I think like everyone already knew

    39:56

that answer we've discussed it before that we both have some I was like what's the best milk alternative I had a few ways to go bad

    40:02

but I figured we'd discuss all those things earlier in the episode so the bonus question I chose is what's the

    40:07

best milk flavor so like plain milk chocolate milk strawberry milk I've seen

    40:13

like banana milk vanilla milk I saw on Tick Tock or Instagram the other day like apple pie a la mode milk

    40:21

so there's all kinds of flavors I don't know what your experience or how far you've gone the milk taste tests

    40:28

but what is the best milk flavor I'm I've not tried a lot of these I feel

    40:34

like the farthest I've gone is maybe banana yeah I've never had vanilla milk I've never heard of that yeah I think I

    40:43

would sell it like little cartons huh interesting but I'm a chocolate milk girly I love

    40:51

chocolate milk so much the cold chocolate milk tastes so good

    40:56

it's it's so good it's one of my favorites

    41:02

that's my answer too like I know it's boring but it's so good I love to put

    41:07

um espresso in mine like coffee and chocolate milk together is so good oh

    41:14

oh yeah you taught me the hot chocolate and coffee combination oh yeah different

    41:20

composition but you know similar concept same idea I recently I posted it on my

    41:25

membership but I mixed hot cocoa mix in some like half and half and like made

    41:31

like a chocolate sweet foam and put it over cold brew that sounds so good yeah it was really

    41:38

good that's my thing lately is like making new drinks like that that's so fun so fun that's the fun

    41:45

thing about coffee you can like do all these different things I know there's always new creamers to try and

    41:51

if there's not you can like make your own different stuff at home you could do I do like I'll do cold brew

    41:57

one day I'll do a latte the next day I'll do like a hot cup the next day like I totally mix it up almost every day

    42:02

I'm not the person who has like a routine like same coffee every morning it's always different

    42:08

it's fun it's fun it'll work well for our coffee shop that we open yes

    42:15

yeah with all the dogs in our podcast playing on the what's it called the

    42:20

    overcome yeah yeah

    42:26

I don't know that we'd make really good background noise no maybe we can if there's like a friend of our who's who's

    42:33

an up-and-coming artist who could play their music and then we could have our podcast corner where an episode is

    42:39

playing yeah that'd be fun that's a better idea okay

    42:45

anyway that was kind of a boring bonus question that's the best I could do today sorry guys I was just trying to like stay fun that was that was a good

    42:52

question I think it was a good thing if we like were milk enthusiasts a little bit more

    42:58

I mean I love me some milk but I don't just like drink milk except for chocolate no oh I have a question okay

    43:05

now we're just gonna really deter do you know those straws maybe 10 years

    43:11

ago that would have them made of cereal were they made a cereal but they were

    43:16

like flavored and yeah purposely oh I just I never knew what they were made of I think so like they

    43:23

had like fruit loops flavored ones all kinds of stuff yeah the one I had access

    43:28

to were like all like fruit flavored but you were you were supposed to like drink them with milk yeah

    43:35

so I feel like if we had someone who was like really passionate about that and then like maybe mixing the milks

    43:41

with the straw that oh yeah oh yeah like a strawberry milk with like uh I don't

    43:48

know or like a chocolate cereal oh yeah

    43:54

it's like chocolate strawberry I just don't know how much flavor you get from the straw when you're just drinking

    43:59

through it unless they actually crunch into it that's true but then you can't use it to

    44:06

suck up anymore if you chew on it yeah yeah there's a reason those aren't

    44:12

really popular anymore no but they were a fun idea they were fun remember grip-its did you ever get those

    44:20

are those like the little Cheez-Its little yeah they had Cheez-Its they had like Chips Ahoy kind of things I love

    44:26

those so much they say that are smaller I don't know why well it's like more surface level yeah maybe surface area

    44:34

surfacer it's like like uh the many M Ms are so

    44:40

much better than regular M M's yeah so we hope you enjoyed our Dairy episode

    44:46

and we hope you learned something new today thanks for tuning in

    44:52

and let us know what your favorite flavor of milk is yeah or if it's a

    44:59

different one we didn't mention we always say let us know I was thinking today we got to figure out

    45:04

like I tried to like look on the website I'm thinking I might put like a submission thing on the website where

    45:09

you can like either answer a bonus question with us submit like a future episode request

    45:16

um or just like generally ask the question is there a way to add like you know how blog posts have comments is

    45:22

there a way to like add a specific question under oh probably our episode page like and be like what is your fave

    45:29

like and have it on that page yeah yeah definitely okay we'll do that instead of

    45:35

just saying let us know because you always can DMS but yeah I don't know if

    45:40

you feel comfortable enough being like I like banana milk we love those we yeah if you did we

    45:48

would love that but I get it if you don't want to do that yeah okay stay tuned I'll work on that behind
